Cooling a Hot Courtyard with New Shade and Surfacing

Description

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Early Childhood Center at the Henderson Hopkins School in Baltimore, Maryland is the site of this nature play space, a collaboration between Downtown Baltimore Child Care, Baltimore City Head Start, and the Mayor’s Office of Children and Family Success.

We replaced hot rubber surfacing in a city courtyard with a hill for climbing and sliding, logs for balancing and jumping, a sand pit for digging, engineering, and pretending, native trees for shade, shrubs (including blueberry bushes), and a serpentine peddling path with hundreds of fern and leaf imprints.

We are proud to have created Baltimore City Head Start’s first nature play space built by our friends at Green Roots Landscaping.
